Substack LIVE Episode with Ellen Bender & Host Susan Wagner
Tune in to The Grassroots Connector's 2nd Substack LIVE episode of It Needs to Be Said.
This episode is a conversation with Ellen Bender, a co-founder of Markers For Democracy. Ellen and Susan will discuss the completely volunteer-driven organization that started at a Le Pain Quotidien on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and is now nationwide with over six thousand members. Susan Wagner is also a co-founder.
Ellen and Susan are often called upon by candidates, pro-democracy organizations, and other grassroots groups for their opinions and to collaborate on campaigns, fundraisers, and messaging. Markers For Democracy is known for writing postcards in support of down-ballot candidates; its programming, hosting over 800 candidates and other guests on community Zooms; and for raising over $750K through its States Project Giving Circle.

Afshi Charania and Angie Wierzbicki
Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD)
Fort Bend, Texas
Election is Saturday, May 3, 2025
Mailing Deadline: Write your cards, proof your work, stamp your cards, and MAIL the completed cards ASAP, but no later than Thursday, April 24, 2025. If you live in Texas or a bordering state, mail no later than Saturday, April 26.
Afshi Charania Merchant and Angie Wierzbicki are running for the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD), the sixth-largest school district in Texas, encompassing most of the city of Sugar Land, parts of Houston, and surrounding areas. Their wins would flip the majority on that board and help in the battle against school vouchers in Texas (which diverts state money away from public schools), as well as the state’s controversial Bluebonnet curriculum, which seeks to interject Biblical teachings into public elementary schools.
