Chop Wood, Carry Texas! 🌵 6/29
Hi, Team Texas!
First, I wanted to reach out and send you all a virtual hug. What a horrid, brutal week or two (or fifty) it’s been. It’s easy to feel despair, rage, and even utter hopelessness.
As Mariame Kaba says, though, “Hope is a discipline.”
It is, in other words, an action.
To that end, let’s DO something hopeful, whether we feel hopeful or not. Because that, in my experience, is how we both feel better AND make change.
On Thursday, July 7th @4-5pm PDT my local Swing Left group will be joining VoteRiders and the Texas Turnout Coalition for a virtual letter-writing party that will actually be a friendly competition! We'll be reaching out to a list of approximately 2k newly registered high school voters in the Rio Grande Valley collected by students themselves. Having the correct form of ID (VoteRiders’s primary focus) was one of the biggest obstacles to voting among this population during the March primaries in Texas and we want to remove as many obstacles as possible!
Handwritten letters help ensure these new Texas voters have the information and ID they need to cast a ballot that counts in November's Midterm election. And whichever group gets the most letters written gets a special prize at the end! I will be playing for The Good Deed Corps (GDC), and I’m inviting you to join me.
Join the team (and register for the event) HERE!
Thanks! One more thing—can you find someone else who is equally furious and sickened by what’s happening and see if you can recruit them to team Texas? There are nine other states they can choose from, too, if TX isn’t their style. But if we’re going to win this nasty, drawn-out, existential fight…we’re going to need a bigger army.
More soon.
Jess
